History of the IEC Haiti

In 2010, after the earthquake in Haiti that killed more than 3,000 people, a group of people showing solidarity with Haiti began acting as intermediaries for the social programmes of the Haitian foundation TET KOLE (CABEZAS JUNTAS, which later changed its name to Centro Educativo Integrado CEI) thanks to a contact with the Vilafant town council (Alt Empordà – GERONA).

This collaboration resulted in a municipal donation of 800 euros, which was used to help 87 children and families by providing them with food and basic necessities. After 3 years, they took the initiative to create the “Haiti Solidarity Support Group (GRASH)”.

This association was founded in 2014 by Raymond Jean Julien, its current president, accompanied by Lesly Lamorthe Junior, both Haitians, and was registered at the end of 2015 and 2016.

Working in the fields of education, agriculture, socio-professional training, community involvement and leadership development, the Centre for Integrated Education (CEI) promotes the use of local resources for quality education in order to stimulate the local, regional and national economy by investing in education to stimulate the socio-professional integration of vulnerable young people, women and girls.

In 2016, GRASH Spain is working with CEI in Haiti, with the main aim of helping to improve the living conditions of people (children, young people and families) living alone on the streets, giving them the opportunity to rebuild their lives, enabling children to rediscover their childhood and embark on a project for the future.

GRASH Spain and CEI focus their projects in Haiti mainly on two populations: in the Jacmel mountains, a rural area of 23,000 inhabitants, and in the city of Jacmel, in a specific area managed jointly with the city council.

In 2017, a three-person Catalan delegation, led by Loli Hernandez, visited CEI in Jacmel and the Mountain to support a sports and health project.
